About Amphora Connect

Amphora Connect is part of the Amphora Group of companies, owned by Colchester City Council and focusing on building and improving infrastructure. Since we launched in 2017, we’ve been leading the way in upgrading Colchester’s digital connectivity. Thanks to strong public and private sector support, we’ve secured millions of pounds in investment to help power the city’s digital future.

Today, we’re proud to operate the UK’s largest municipally-owned telecoms network. Our fibre infrastructure stretches across Colchester — from the Northern Gateway to Friday Woods, and from Stanway to the University of Essex — with additional networks in Ipswich, Braintree, and Harlow.

Our services include ultrafast broadband (up to 10Gbps), secure and reliable managed connectivity, and dedicated fibre links. We also manage the infrastructure behind key services for the city, such as Colchester City Council’s CCTV network (covering nearly 500 cameras) and the Helpline service, which supports thousands of older residents in living independently.

With over 90,000km of fibre laid and presence across all urban areas of Colchester, we’re well connected — literally. We maintain high-capacity links to our peering partners at Telehouse in London's Docklands, the UK’s primary internet exchange. Our customers range from local homes and businesses in areas like the city centre, south Colchester, and Wivenhoe, to major venues such as the Mercury Theatre, Charter Hall, and the Colchester Football and Rugby Club. We also serve many sheltered housing communities and almshouses.

As a commercial business with a strong sense of social purpose, everything we do is built around delivering value to our community. Any profits we make are returned to Colchester City Council to help support wider public services and local projects.
